Aharbal Kounsarnag Trek
An absolutely stunning trek can be found in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir called the Aharbal Kousarnag Trek. The walk starts at the well-known Aharbal Waterfall and continues through lovely valleys, verdant forests, and picturesque meadows. You may observe residents’ traditional way of life as the trail goes through small communities. The tranquil Kousarnag Lake, which is situated at an elevation of 4,000 metres above sea level, is the trek’s high point. Detailed itinerary
Day 1: Aharabal - Gurwattan - Mahinag
Trek starts from Gurwattan walking on the trail overlooking the Aharbal river on your right and in 2 hours we are at Kongwattan which is a beautiful vast meadow. From Kongwattan in about 3 to 4 hours you reach Mahinag which is a vast river basin where the raging river widens across the basin and humbles in its intensity. We camp for the night at the beginning of Mahinag.. Total distance covered in the first day 13 kms.. gentle ascent of almost 800 meters
Day 2: Mahinag - Kounsarnag Lake
Next day we start the trek to Kounsarnag which is 7 Kms. The trek starts with a gradual ascent through rocky mountains and boulders and then opens up to the Mahinag river basin with a short descent. This is one of the attractions of the Journey as you walk the wide river basin and grassy meadows towards the final challenge which is the steep ascent on the mountain overlooking the Kounsarnag Lake. As you climb over the ridge, the amazing Kounsarnag opens up in front of you with a backdrop of majestic glacial mountains. We set up camp for the night and enjoy the enchanting environment of this beautiful water body.
Day 3: Kounsarnag Lake - Mahinag
We trek back towards Mahinag and setup our return transit camp for the night. Enjoy the gushing waters alongside the campsite and a bonfire to keep you warm.
Day 4: Mahinag - Gurwattan - Aharbal
Return trek to Gurwattan Aharbal and drive back to Srinagar.

As an experienced trekker and founder of InterExperia, a trekking travel agency in Kashmir, I highly recommend trekking in this region. Kashmir offers a diverse range of trekking routes that cater to all levels of experience and fitness. Some of the popular trekking routes in Kashmir include the Great Lakes Trek, Tarsar Marsar Trek, and Kashmir Alpine Lakes Trek. These treks offer breathtaking views of snow-capped mountains, alpine meadows, and pristine lakes. It’s important to note that Kashmir is a high-altitude region, and proper acclimatization is necessary to avoid altitude sickness. We recommend spending a few days in Srinagar or other lower altitude areas before starting the trek.Additionally, it’s essential to be well-equipped for the trek, including proper clothing, footwear, and trekking gear. It’s also crucial to have a knowledgeable guide who is familiar with the terrain and can provide necessary support during the trek.
Overall, trekking in Kashmir is an incredible experience that allows you to connect with nature and explore the beauty of this region. At InterExperia, we strive to provide our clients with a safe and memorable trekking experience in Kashmir.
